Join internationally respected photographer John Sexton for an educational, informative, and entertaining audio-visual presentation, as he shares his images and insights covering his more than 30-year photographic career.  Known for his elegant, finely crafted, large format black and white photographs, Sexton prefers to photograph the quiet message of the natural environment. This all-new presentation will include many images from John’s most recent book, Recollections: Three Decades of Photographs.

An articulate speaker with a delightful sense of humor and a wealth of photographic expertise, this presentation will transport viewers “on location,” as John shows new work along with a number of well-known images, many from his three previous award-winning books, Quiet Light, Listen to the Trees, and Places of Power: The Aesthetics of Technology.

The talk will also include examples and anecdotes drawn from his six-year close working relationship with Ansel Adams as Adams’ Photographic and Technical Assistant, and later as his consultant. Images by both Sexton and Adams will be transformed on the screen from the negative to the final print, progressing through the various creative steps in the evolution of an expressive photographic print.

Sexton has worked with thousands of photographers in his workshops, seminars, and lectures throughout the world.  His photographs have been featured in numerous international exhibitions, collections, and photographic publications.  Attendees will gain both information and inspiration from this lively presentation. Sexton will be available to sign copies of his book, Recollections, following the lecture.

John Sexton is internationally respected as a photographer, print maker, workshop instructor, and lecturer.  Author of four award-winning photographic books, Quiet Light, Listen to the Trees, Places of Power, and most recently Recollections, he is best known for his luminous, quiet, black and white images of the natural environment. Sexton’s photographs have been featured in numerous international exhibitions, collections, and publications.  John has received many honors and awards during his photographic career, including an Honorary Master of Science degree from Brooks Institute of Photography in 1990.  Most recently he received the 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Nature Photography Association.

*Spectrum Art Gallery is pleased to announce this special event held in conjunction with its Print Auction to be held at 608 E. Olive Avenue. Any person that pays the $10.00 admission to participate in John’s lecture will receive a numbered ticket upon entering the hall. That ticket will go into a bonus drawing to be held just before the live auction Saturday night – October 25th ($5.00 student ticket holders are not eligible for this drawing). John Sexton and Anne Larsen have donated an original John Sexton print for this event. This beautiful print – titled Sea of Aspen, is an 11x14 gelatin silver print, mounted, over matted, and signed by the artist.

The ticket must be present to win on the night of the auction.

Spectrum Art Gallery would like to acknowledge John and Anne’s support for our efforts to bring the finest names in photography to the central San Joaquin Valley. Gestures such as this show both their, and the Gallery’s, commitment to furthering this fine art form in our area.
